Writing informative articles for the internet has a few web specific twists that you do not face when writing for some other venue like a magazine or newspaper. There are certain techniques the search engines use to find the page with the most information about the topic being queried. One of the more important elements you will need to place into your writing is keyword saturation.
The subject matter of your article is very important and you will need to repeat that subject from time to time within your article. As an example, if your topic is Keyword Saturation, you will need to include those exact same words into your article a number of times. A good rule of thumb is that your selected keyword or phrase be used about once every one hundred to one hundred fifty words you have written in your article.
There are those who complain that this stifles their creative processes when they are putting ideas down. However, in order for the search engines to find your page among the thousands of pages on the web that may be discussing the exact same topic, you have to have the words there to be read. You could have the best article ever created about keyword saturation, but if you only mentioned your topic by name once, then the search engines out looking for that phrase will not register much information about that topic. If the search engine encounters this phrase six or seven times on a page, it will register a greater content value and place that page in the results many pages before your one keyword count.
Another place the search engines look for effective keyword placement is in your headers. A keyword or phrase in an article header will give an extra value over one in the body copy text even if you have coded that word to be emphasized. This repeating of the keyword or phrase does not have to be inserted in an awkward manner. With a little care, the word or phrase can be made to blend in with the surrounding text so the human reader will be reminded of what they are reading about.
There is a limit to how many times you can safely repeat your keyword phrase. There are sites that will list a block of copy that consists only of repeated keywords in hopes of tricking the program. This is a dangerous ploy. Too many entries of the same keyword or phrase will throw flags up and a human moderator will eventually come by to check it out. This will get you banned from the major search engines as quickly as if you had placed them on your page with the font being the same color as the background. Both ploys are considered unethical and a form of search engine "spam".
Always reread your article with an eye on where your keywords will fit well and rework sentences that sound awkward or stilted. It is not hard to find a successful amount of keyword saturation in your article if you remember to use fewer pronouns to describe your subject. When you couple good keyword saturation with the proper keyword listings in your meta-tags in the header of your page, you will find that the search engines will not only find you quicker but will eventually reward you with a higher page ranking.
