Search Engine Optimization can be described as a process of increasing visitors to a particular website by analyzing your site and modifying it to enable search engines to read it, and index it correctly. Generally higher the website ranks in Search Engines (specially Google) higher the amount of traffic it gets. For example if two sites (say www.mysite .com and www.yoursi te.com) has a page rank 6 and 8 respectively then the latter one will get more traffic compared to the first one. Also if a site ranks higher in "search results" then it'll attract more amount of visitors. Generally when people search for something they only check first/second page of search result, so if your site's pages comes in that range then chances are your site will attract large amount of visitors. In short it is subtle changes, adding or modifying inconspicuous visible and invisible text so that the search engines can read the site
